Dr. Haanes specializes in advising biotechnology companies on complex legal issues relating to the worldwide protection and enforcement of their intellectual property, especially in the areas of immunology, virology, vaccines, genomics, proteomics, gene therapy, and biotherapeutics. She advises clients on the creation and management of complex international patent portfolios, freedom-to-operate and patentability issues, validity and infringement issues, and due diligence investigations.
Dr. Haanes has written and presented lectures on IP topics relevant to vaccines, recombinant antibodies, and drug discovery tools. She was a co-author of an Amicus Brief to the United States Supreme Court in Merck v. Integra. She has been recognized for her ability to advise how IP issues will affect a business, as she is frequently asked to present at industry meetings with a scope beyond legal topics.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Dr. Haanes served as Project Coordinator of the Molecular Vaccines group at a small biotechnology company in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she directed a team of scientists working on the development and testing of viral vector, nucleic acid, and subunit vaccines for use in companion animals.
Dr. Haanes performed post-doctoral research at the University of Minnesota and at a major pharmaceutical company, specializing in virology and vaccine development. She has published widely in the areas of microbial pathogenesis, molecular virology, and vaccine research, and has presented her research at national and international scientific meetings. She is an inventor on numerous patents and published applications relating to recombinant vaccines.
