Theodore A. Wood

Mr. Wood is a director in the Electronics Group with a unique confluence of nearly 30 years of microprocessor, computer networking, and communications related technical, legal, military, and business development experience.  He uses this experience to help companies protect and leverage their innovation and ensure marketplace exclusivity.

Mr. Wood is also a key member of the firm's Grid Industry Group, where he focuses on helping innovators involved with ensuring power grid resiliency in an evolving smart grid infrastructure.

Mr. Wood's work before the United States Patent and Trademark Office includes patent application preparation and prosecution, reissue, reexamination, and appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. He has served the role of virtual in-house IP counsel for several high technology emerging companies, where he developed programs to identify, protect, manage, and commercialize IP assets.  Additionally, he has helped establish reexamination strategies to challenge the validity of existing patents.

Mr. Wood has worked on intellectual property matters involving many technologies, including electronics, computer graphics, computer architecture, networks, and network protocols, telecommunications networks, wireless communication systems, e-commerce and Internet applications, GPS location-based services, intelligent vehicle systems, automotive systems, and medical devices.

Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Mr. Wood achieved the rank of Major with the U.S. Air Force and currently serves as Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. While in the Air Force, Mr. Wood was responsible for the design, testing, and analysis of threat signal detection algorithms for aircraft electronic combat systems. He was also lead engineer for development of the down link module for the MILSTAR communications satellite system and author of an associated paper "The Use of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices for Signal Processing." Additionally, Mr. Wood has experience in the application of low observable technology and testing, as well as its impact upon the reduction of radar cross section.   While in law school, he was a law clerk with a private company in the IP Law Section.

  • Adjunct professor of Intellectual Property Law at Northern Virginia Community College
  • Resource for school officials at North Carolina A&T State University, and mentor to their engineering students
  • University of Dayton School of Law Alumni Board of Trustees
  • University of Dayton School of Law, Program in Law and Technology Board of Advisors, and mentor to their law students
  • Board of Advisors for The JD Project which is committed to achieving racial diversity in the legal profession
  • Vice-Chair, Trade Secrets Committee of the IP Law Section of the DC Bar and Vice-Chair, ABA Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection Committee
  • Innovation Partner for North Carolina State University's Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center
  • Formally trained member of the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program, representing veterans in their claims before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims
  • Board of Directors for the Children's Focus Foundation
  • Member on the Northern Virginia Community College Advisory Committee

Mr. Wood also chairs the Diversity Committee at Sterne Kessler.
